About the speaker

Gasali Adeyemo is a master of traditional Yoruba fiber arts. Born and raised in the small village of Ofatedo in Nigeria, Gasali’s artistic journey began under the guidance of his mother, who taught him the cultural arts of the Yoruba people. He later spent six years at the Nike Center for Arts and Culture, where he mastered the crafts of batik painting, indigo dyeing, quilt making, and more, before becoming an instructor himself.

In his talk, “African Blues: My Life in Indigo,” Gasali will share the story of his path from Nigeria to the world stage, where he has traveled extensively to exhibit his work and lead workshops. He will explore the deep cultural significance of indigo dyeing in Yoruba tradition, and introduce us to the intricate techniques of batik, adire eleko, and tie-dye that have been passed down through generations.

Join us for this inspiring and culturally rich presentation as Gasali shares the beauty, history, and meaning behind the fiber arts of the Yoruba people, and his ongoing mission to preserve and spread these traditional practices globally.
