Good content but thin pages
This book was pretty good but I found myself getting distracted a lot by the thin pages where you could see the words on the back of the page peeking or bleeding through the page you are currently reading. Sometimes I have a hard time focusing and this kept catching my eye and taking my brain off track while reading. Also the pages were periodically stuck together at the bottom of the book and this was annoying (I ripped a few pages trying to "unstick" or separate them). This is a multi-part book, where part one focuses on the theory and part two hones in on how to put the theory into practice as a parent. Each part also has sub-categories:Part one (theory):1. Early Emotional Learning Is Foundational2. Stages of Emotional Development3. Expanding on Core Beliefs4. Connect-to-Grow: Breaking Down the ApproachPart two (in practice):5. The Connect-to-Grow Approach in Practice6. Routines7. Building Connections8. Mindfulness9. Emotional Courage10. Gratitude11. Self-Esteem12. Authenticity13. Growth Mindset14. Self-Acceptance15. Conflict Resolution16. Change17. Anxiety18. Grief and Loss19. Self-Expression20. CreativityI feel these topics are all carefully curated and the "in practice" part of the book highlights each part of the Connect-to-Grow approach (connect, reflect, practice, grow). They use icons to remind you which part of the approach they're highlighting, which was slightly hard to remember and I had to keep looking back at the icon. Regardless, it's a smart approach and all steps are critical to affect change. I had never heard of Slumberkins before this - these are characters that are "mascots of the emotional wellness skill or theme." This book connects to those characters to provide other resources outside of the book "if you so choose" to use those other resources the authors have made available.Sumberkins "Caring Crew" (supports children in learning to take care of themselves and others):Sloth - RoutinesOtter - Building ConnectionsYeti - MindfulnessIbex - Emotional CourageHoney Bear - Gratitude"Confidence Crew" (reinforce a child's belief in themselves and their ability to face challenges):Bigfoot - Self-EsteemUnicorn - AuthenticityNarwhal - Growth MindsetYak - Self-AcceptanceHammerhead - Conflict Resolution"Resilience Crew" (we can get through hard times and we don't have to do it alone):Fox - ChangeAlpaca - Stress ReliefSprite - Grief and LossLynx - Self-ExpressionDragon - CreativityThe book is fairly easy to read and often includes bullets with things to remember, key takeaways, or section summaries which is very helpful. The content is really good and I have enjoyed reading it. I like that they tie in the actual Slumberkins characters. But the paper feels so cheap…like newspaper. I’m a person who highlights in books, but I feel like I can’t in this one because it’s just going to bleed right through.

I am enjoying the content of the book so far and appreciate the thought, care, and expertise that went into it -- but where did that thought go when selecting the physical attributes of the book? 🥲 The paper used is a VERY thin and transparent paper that feels pretty cheap and lightweight in the hand, and text showing through from the opposite side can make it a little hard to read depending on the lighting. It's a bummer that such valuable content was put on cheapy paper and not the nice, thicker paper you often see in hardback books....

I work with middle and high school aged girls and am always looking for advice on helping them deal with social and emotional issues. This book is written for parents but the advice is good for anyone who refuses is with young people. The basic idea is create relationships with with that allow for trust. I also like the emphasis on creating core values which give children a stable way to approach the world. There is some sound advice on building connections, promoting self esteem and self acceptance, and how to deal with conflict and change. This is a solid book that those interested in creating a nurturing environment for children will find helpful--just remember that children are individuals and you will need to adjust to fit each personality.

I had purchased Slumberkins for my kids and used many of the amazing free resources from the Slumberkins website. I resonated with their message and was SO excited when I heard the creators were writing a book for parents! I was not disappointed! Not only did it give a deeper dive into the world of Slumberkins and how the Kins can support different areas of development; but there are also so many golden nuggets for parents in regards to core beliefs and the "connect to grow" approach. I loved the Parent Reflection Moments in the chapters and feel like I am really connecting with my kids in a more meaningful way. I highly recommend this book and Slumberkins! One of the best parenting investments I have made!
