TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The Office of the 7th District of Arizona announced the passing of Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva.

He died from complications related to his cancer treatments.

Grijalva served Southern Arizonans in Washington, D.C., for over two decades.

"From permanently protecting the Grand Canyon for future generations to strengthening the Affordable Care Act, his proudest moments in Congress have always been guided by community voices," said the office of Rep. Grijalva.

He led efforts in climate action, port of entry modernization, and health care access for tribal communities and the uninsured.

His work also included supporting immigrant families, Dreamers, and student loan forgiveness.

Grijalva was instrumental in creating public parks, childcare centers, health care clinics, and affordable housing in Southern Arizona.

"His strong belief was that no matter where you're from, one truth unites us all: everyone deserves the freedom to live a healthy life, and every child deserves a safe and fair chance at their future," said the office of Rep. Grijalva.

The office will continue providing constituent services during the special election.

"We are heartbroken in the face of this news but determined to carry on his legacy," said the staff of Rep. Grijalva.

His daughter, Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, said in a statement on Facebook, "He dedicated over 50 years of his life to speaking up for those who couldn't speak for themselves. He is the smartest person I'll ever know - a fighter until the end. He loved his family, especially those grandbabies, and this community."

Serving Southern Arizona was Grijalva's greatest honor.

"We thank all of you for the trust, support, and the partnership that you gave to Rep. Grijalva over the years," said the staff of Rep. Grijalva.
