🚨 Black Founders Shut Out! Only 0.3% of VC Funding in First half of 2024! 💼💥 Top 3 Deals Alone Claim 32% of Total Raised. 💰 In the first half of 2024, Black-founded U.S. startups secured $228 million in funding, accounting for just 0.3% of the nearly $79 billion raised by U.S. startups overall. Even more staggering, the top 3 deals alone—FlutterFlow ($25.5M), FinQuery, Formerly LeaseQuery ($25M), and Campus ($23M)—make up 32.24% of this total. 📊 This marks a 60% drop from H1 2023 and is a long fall from the $4.5 billion raised by Black founders in 2021. Venture deal flow is also at an all-time low, with only 66 deals completed in the first half of 2024—down 53% from last year. 🤯 Despite ongoing discussions around diversity in venture capital, these numbers show that the gap is only widening. Black-founded startups are on pace to raise less than half a billion dollars in 2024, setting a new low in the past decade. 🛑 According to Crunchbase - "While last year did not see Black founders raise $1 billion in total, this year such founders and startups are on pace to raise less than even half-a-billion dollars. In fact, the combined total of funding to Black founders in the second half of last year and the first half this year is only $351 million. Of course a few big rounds in the second half of the year could flip those numbers — but with deal flow also slowing to a crawl for Black founders, such rounds seem unlikely at this point." You miss the point Here is why: If you think of sales as “price x number of customers”, you are wrong There is one “piece” you are missing This missing piece is why my team built the fastest-growing fitness business in Nigeria (and West Africa) Let me explain Case One: - Imagine you have 10 customers and each buys something for $20. That means: - Sales=$20 x 10 customers = $200 Case Two: Now, let’s add something new – the missing piece. What if each of those 10 customers bought from you twice a year? - Sales = $20 x 10 customers x 2 transactions = $400 See the difference? You didn’t need new customers to double your sales—you just needed each customer to buy more often So, How Do You Get Customers to Buy Again? I will show you one of many ways: – Start by recording who your customers are and what they buy – Use this information to figure out which products they might be interested in – Create a special offer with good incentives around this product (it doesn’t have to be a discount) – Send the special offers to past customers with a clear deadline to encourage fast action (make sure you ADD A DEADLINE) – When a customer buys something, recommend additional items that go well with their purchase. The $800,000 Lesson: Why Failure is the Greatest Teacher in Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart. My journey is filled with wins, but some of my most valuable lessons came from failure. Here’s one of the hardest: In 2018, I created a mobile app called Legacy of Love (later Legacy Journal). The idea was to help parents record and preserve moments, memories, and life lessons for future generations. I poured everything into it: >$300,000 of my own money. >$500,000 raised from friends and family. >Countless hours building the vision. Despite our passion, the business never gained the traction we needed. We had only grown to just over 10,000 total users, 2,000 active users and 70 premium subscribers. By 2022, the writing was on the wall: we had to shut down. I lost the financial investment. But worse, I carried the weight of losing the trust of friends and family who had believed in the vision. It was one of the darkest periods of my life. But I learned: Failure isn’t the end—it’s the teacher. Here are 3 lessons I took away: 1. Start Small. Test your ideas before going all-in. Build momentum before scaling. 2. Pick the Right Partners. A great idea needs the right team to execute it. 3. Embrace Resilience. Setbacks are inevitable, but they are also stepping stones to success. Every failure shapes us. It’s not about avoiding failure—it’s about learning from it and coming back stronger. You must be out of your mind! I work hard to prepare ##realestate #investment proposals that go to multi-billion dollar #developers. Then I get a request from a broker to remove my name, #brand and contact details so they can shop my deck around to their clients. like they've done the work and they deserve the reward 🤣 I do site visits to plots in #Dubai, I speak with developers, architects, engineers. I prepare #feasibility studies, assessment on plot utilization, and even recommend a brand that fits the project. Then some guy or gal ask me to remove my name and contacts so they can share with their #investors 🤡 #property #development #international

Recipe for a happy marriage for small business owners: Never tell how much you have spent on prototyping to your wife. Two years ago, I built the first prototype of traction pads using plywood, carbon, and steel. Unfortunately, they turned out to be clumsy, heavy, and unattractive. After a complete redesign, I simplified and refined the design, transitioning to 3D printing for prototypes and real-world testing. I also built a stylish snowboard to serve as a splitsurf/splitboard hybrid for mounting the traction pads. Unfortunately the shape was not best for powsurfing, so I improvised by cutting another previously built powsurf in half and tested it with the 3D printed pads. Although the prototypes worked perfectly now, transitioning to production was a lengthy process involving numerous iterations in pads and also hybrid boards. Now, I'm pleased that everything has fallen into place. I've founf excellent manufacturers who have taken the prototypes to a whole new level. Both the Atlas Hybrid snowboard and the traction pads will hit the market later this summer. Meanwhile, I'm already immersed in developing an even more exciting product set for release in the fall. 💡 More Money ≠ Fewer Problems 💰 I have always been a big dreamer. It was the original reason I decided to become an entrepreneur. I was financially drowning with my business and I couldn’t take it any more. Here’s what I did instead. I was sold the startup dream. Starting a business can be extremely rewarding, but I didn’t realize how much your starting position dictates your path. You see, I invested my entire savings of $15,000 into starting TeaSquares, quit my job, and moved in with my dad. Immediately I was financially drowning underwater and had a limited amount of time and money until I’d have to stop and get a job. I needed to get to the surface, get to breakeven. Desperation and excitement led me to taking on early stage VC money. The investment artificially propped up the company but we weren’t profitable for 5 years. But you know what? 5 years of financially drowning really took a toll on my mental health and eventually led to a panic attack. We shut down the business. After taking some time, I started by next two businesses to be profitable from year 1. Now whenever I see a founder closing or selling their business I see a founder who may have been financially drowning for years. I’m proud of everything they accomplished while sympathetic to their struggles. I want to see more founders operate businesses that make them happier, healthier, and wealthier. #cpg #startup

Contrary to all the self-congratulatory hype in the finance world, it has also been shown to produce poor returns.
